    DIY Security Checklist for Your Home Computer

    You don't need to be a tech expert to secure your home computer. Follow this checklist from our Fort Myers computer security team to protect yourself from common threats.

    Operating System Security

    Windows Security

    • ☐ Ensure Windows is up to date (Settings > Update & Security)
    • ☐ Enable Windows Security (built-in antivirus)
    • ☐ Turn on Windows Firewall
    • ☐ Enable ransomware protection (Controlled Folder Access)
    • ☐ Set up a standard user account for daily use (not Admin)
    • ☐ Enable BitLocker drive encryption (Windows Pro)

    Mac Security

    • ☐ Keep macOS updated (System Preferences > Software Update)
    • ☐ Enable FileVault disk encryption
    • ☐ Turn on the firewall (System Preferences > Security & Privacy)
    • ☐ Only allow apps from App Store and identified developers
    • ☐ Review Privacy permissions for apps

    Software Updates

    Enable Automatic Updates

    Keep everything updated to patch security vulnerabilities:

    • ☐ Operating system automatic updates enabled
    • ☐ Browser auto-updates enabled (Chrome, Firefox, Edge)
    • ☐ Microsoft Office updates enabled
    • ☐ Adobe products updated (Reader, Flash removed)
    • ☐ Java removed or updated (if needed)

    Remove Unnecessary Software

    • ☐ Uninstall programs you don't use
    • ☐ Remove old browser extensions
    • ☐ Clean up startup programs

    Password Security

    • ☐ Avoid accessing sensitive accounts on public WiFi
    • ☐ Turn off auto-connect to open networks

    Backup Security

    • ☐ Backup important files regularly
    • ☐ Use both local and cloud backup
    • ☐ Test backup restoration occasionally
